What is it about?

What if they carry regret, guilt, or unfinished stories?

What if the silence feels heavier than any words you could offer?

In correctional environments, conversations about death are often avoided — out of fear, discomfort, or uncertainty. Yet for incarcerated individuals who are elderly, terminally ill, or deeply isolated, these conversations are not optional. They are deeply human.

This module supports volunteers to show up with presence, sensitivity, and care — even when there are no easy answers.

What Is This Module About?

Conversations That Matter is a asynchronous e-learning designed for volunteers supporting incarcerated individuals who are approaching the end of life or facing unresolved grief and existential concerns.

Dying in prison is not just a physical process. It is often marked by:

  • Loss of dignity and autonomy

  • Estrangement from family and community

  • Unspoken grief and regret and Fear of being forgotten

How This Course Makes a Difference

This course normalises that discomfort and builds confidence gently. It helps volunteers understand that presence matters more than perfect words, and that listening without judgement can restore dignity even in the final stages of life.

You’ll learn how small moments of attention, acknowledgement, and care can make a meaningful difference.

Who is it for?

Ready for the Conversations You Can’t Prepare a Script For?

This module prepares you for the unscripted moments when an incarcerated person speaks about dying helping you stay present, listen with care, respond gently, and offer dignity without rushing to fix or overstepping your role.
