What is it about?

Do you feel uncertain when engaging with individuals who’ve committed violent offences?

Do strong emotions like anger make you uncomfortable or unsure how to respond?

Have you ever hesitated, wondering what to say or what not to say?

Working with individuals with a history of violence can be intimidating. But with the right insight and tools, you can become a steady, supportive presence without fear or overreaction.

This course helps you understand the nature of anger, how it can turn into aggression, and how to support individuals with a history of violence in a respectful, rehabilitative way.

What Is This Module About?

Understanding Anger and Violence is an 8-hour virtual training that gives volunteers a foundational grasp of anger what it is, how it functions, and when it crosses into violence.

You’ll explore the psychological, biological, and social roots of anger and aggression, challenge common misconceptions, and learn how trauma, environment, and emotion interact to drive violent behaviours.

You’ll also reflect on your own values, triggers, and responses, learning how to stay grounded, objective, and helpful when working with people who carry violent pasts.

By the end of the course, you’ll walk away with:

  • A deeper understanding of anger and its functions

  • Clarity on the line between anger and violence

  • Insights into the lived realities behind violent offenses

  • Practical tools for supporting others and managing your own emotional safety
